My name is Stephen Van Blarcom and I go by Steve or Street Rod Steve. I was born and raised in the Portland Maine area. I married my lovely wife, Judy in 1969. We have a beautiful daughter, Laura, and she has blessed us with two awesome Grandsons, Drew and Derek Gilmore. I have moved around the Northeast a bit. We lived in Maine, Massachusetts, Maine again, Vermont, back to Maine, then to New Hampshire, and finally to Connecticut. We think we are here to stay, at least as long as the Grandsons are here.

I have been interested in cars for as long as I can remember. When I was only four years old, I could tell you every make and model on the road. (At least that is what my mom used to say) Ha Ha! Before I could afford real cars or was old enough to own one, I built model cars. I wish I had kept my collection but I didn’t. I delivered papers to earn money to buy models. When I couldn’t buy a new one, I took an existing one all apart to customize it and change it around as much as I could.

When I was around 8 or 9 years old I built a soapbox derby to race. I built it completely by myself, only to discover that the kids I was racing against had pro built fiberglass bodies and most had their parents build their cars. Needless to say, I couldn’t compete very well but I did it two years in a row anyway and had a lot of fun. The best part was that I acquired official soapbox derby wheels to use on my local hill racer. I could beat everyone here on my street with those wheels.

I bought several cars to run in a field when I was 13 and 14. I bought my first street legal car when I was 14. It was a 57 Ford (What was I Thinking?). I had to go to a junkyard and buy new front fenders for it but I fixed it up enough to drive. My list of cars from there goes on so far I can’t even remember them all. However, the most memorable car I owned was my second car. It was a 55 Chevy, 210, post car. My love for “shoe box Chevy’s has been there ever since. Later on when I was in High School, I branched off into motorcycles. Of course my first bikes were Honda’s as they were cheap and plentiful. That list goes on a bit too, but I have finally graduated to Harleys and a custom Chopper. When I was young and everyone else was playing baseball, basketball, football, or soccer, I was only interested in cars and bikes. If it didn’t have wheels or burn gasoline, it wasn’t for me. I also liked NASCAR even way back then.

Fast Forward to today, I am still married to the most wonderful person in the world, my wife Judy. I have retired from a company that made me very proud to be a part of it. That company is UPS. I am very fortunate in that I have my own shop on 2 Christoni Lane in Wallingford, CT. I just love either restoring a car, or building one from scratch. I have Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Classics and even bikes. I show my cars some but mostly I enjoy building them rebuilding them, and maintaining them. I love to drive them all. I get the biggest thrill out of using them and having to keep them up.

I wish the best to all my friends and family, Steve.
